The WSS object model contains a special class that is responsible for generating the form digest. It is called, appropriately, the FormDigest class. If you select to view the source on any WSS page and search it for the term REQUESTDIGEST, you can find the token this class generates. The following code shows an example of a form digest: <input type="hidden" name="__REQUESTDIGEST" value="0x2F7DCB9B409F835723CC4DCCD2473356,10 Jun 2004 21:49:56 -0000" /> In order to utilize any of the POST methods, we will have to provide a valid form digest associated with the form we build to make the method call. Furthermore, the only way to get a valid form digest is for our web pages to actually be part of WSS. This means that we must build forms that make the appropriate method calls, that include a FormDigest class, and that are stored in a WSS Document Library so that a valid form digest can be generated when we access the page. Table 2-12 lists all of the methods that we can call using the POST format. Table 2-12. Available POST Methods

The constructor takes two parameters: the current version and the URL of the XML that defines the most recent version. It also takes an optional quiet parameter. If quiet is true, which it is by default, and there is no version, the user isn t notified. The UpdateHandler constructor makes the request of the server at this URL. The onVersionReturn method is called when the XML is found. This method parses through the objects to find the version number. You need to build two versions of the code in release mode. The first is version 1, which you keep locally. The second is version 2, which you put on the site. You can then launch the 1 version locally (see Figure 4-15).

You should note that this will not work if the application is being run directly from Flash Builder because applications run in the test launcher ( adl ) cannot self-update. You need to export the release build and run it from there.

It s important to maintain the certificate that you created when you built the release application, as the two certificates will need to be identical for the update process to work. In case you run into issues when trying to update, check that the update air file can update the installed version manually by trying to install the new version.
